Project Summary
ASD’s Learning Landscapes program is a school and after-school garden program that teaches children how to create, plant, tend, nurture, cultivate, and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables while having fun in an enriching, creative environment.
ASD partners with ten organizations/schools in the Bristol area as well as four schools in Buchanan County and is currently adding a garden at the Abingdon Boys and Girls Club center.
Embracing STEAM concepts, our Learning Landscapes leaders allow for children to try new things, work on what they are interested in, build leadership and teamwork skills, and recognize the interconnectedness of nature, agriculture, and society.
Responsibilities for this position may shift with changes in grant funding but will focus on gardening education and edible gardens in school and after school programs.
Position Summary
This position will work with the Regenerative Agriculture Program Manager (RAPM) to ensure successful school and after school garden programs.
The Learning Landscapes Program Manager will attend in-person “garden days” with our current partners, ranging from 15-20 hours per week.
Other duties include coordinating garden days with partner staff; communicating with the RAPM to identify needs, goals, and growth; garden installation and maintenance; developing and implementing lesson plans; and connecting with current inactive and future potential partners to expand the program.
Responsibilities
· Build a new garden at consolidated Bristol, VA elementary school.
· Maintain current Learning Landscapes gardens.
· Work with partners to develop a schedule that works for each site.
· Be reliable.
Gardens and children require structure and continuity.
· Ensure children feel comfortable, happy, and are provided with a healthy learning environment.
· Record keeping: track number of children, activities, number of volunteers [KTB1] for each garden visit.
· Communicate garden needs to RAPM for continued excellent relationships/garden success.
· Travel to and from Learning Landscapes gardens on a regular basis.
Requirements
· Experience with children
· Some gardening knowledge
· Excellent time management
· Excellent communication skills
· Ability to lift 50 lbs
· Current driver’s license
· Access to a reliable vehicle to travel to and from garden sites
· Flexibility.
This position involves working with kids of all ages and abilities
Pay Range
· $17-20/hr
